Adolf Hitler e Jesse Owens
Il negro Jesse Owens disse :
"I think the writers showed bad taste in criticizing the man of the hour in Germany....(Hitler)"
"Hitler didn't snub me—it was Franklin D. Roosevelt who snubbed me.
The president didn't even send me a telegram."
Jesse Owens was never invited to the White House nor bestowed any honors by Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) or Harry S. Truman during their terms. Owens was cheered enthusiastically by 110,000 people in Berlin's Olympic Stadium and later ordinary Germans sought his autograph when they saw him in the streets.

Nel pomeriggio di quel 4 agosto, infatti, allo stadio olimpico era presente anche Adolf Hitler...
Di fronte alla vittoria di Owens contro il tedesco Luz Long, il Führer indispettito si sarebbe alzato e sarebbe uscito dallo stadio per non stringere la mano al nero americano.
In realtà le cose andarono diversamente.
Come scrisse nella sua autobiografia, "The Jesse Owens Story", Owens stesso raccontò come Hitler si alzò in piedi e gli fece un cenno con la mano:
| «Quel giorno, dopo essere salito sul podio del vincitore, passai davanti alla tribuna d'onore per rientrare negli spogliatoi. Il cancelliere tedesco mi guardò, si alzò in piedi e mi salutò con un cenno della mano. E io feci altrettanto. | |
